Web Design Agencies: 10 Real Options and How to Compare Them

Key points

  • Who wrote this: Design Elite, a Paris design studio that competes with several agencies named on this page.
  • Why no number one: the listicles ranking for this keyword put their own author first, so this list is grouped by pricing model instead.
  • The real choice: project fee, monthly subscription, or a directory-sourced vendor.
  • Published prices: only Superside ($15,000 monthly minimum) and Design Elite (from 949.90 EUR per month) state a number without a sales call.
  • Biggest delay risk: unfinished briefs, review by committee and late copy, not the design itself.

Design Elite is a design studio based in Paris, and it sells web design work. That makes us a competitor of several companies named on this page, so treat the list as informed rather than neutral.

This page still tries to be useful. Every firm below is real, every fact comes from the company's own site or from a public ranking, and Design Elite is not placed first.

Why there is no number one on this list

Almost every agency listicle that ranks for this query puts its own author in first place. Mythology's ranking of New York branding agencies opens with Mythology. Nativz's list of Dallas branding agencies opens with Nativz.

A ranking where the author wins is a sales page wearing a comparison table. The firms below are therefore grouped by how they charge you, which is the difference that actually changes your decision.

What a web design agency does

A web design agency plans and designs a website, and in many cases builds and maintains it too.

The work splits into four jobs: information architecture, visual design, front end build, and measurement after launch. Some agencies own all four. Many own two and subcontract the rest.

That split decides your budget more than the portfolio does. A studio that designs but does not code quotes less and finishes sooner, and then you still need a developer. Our guide to what a web mockup costs breaks that stage down on its own.

The three models you are actually choosing between

Most of the decision happens before you look at a single portfolio, because the three delivery models price and fail in different ways.

  • Project agencies. A scoped fee for a defined site, with a start and an end date. Predictable, and expensive to reopen once the invoice is closed.
  • Subscription or retainer studios. A flat monthly fee for a queue of requests. Cheaper per asset once the work keeps coming, and a poor fit for one large site with no follow-up.
  • Directory-sourced vendors. Firms you find and filter on Clutch or DesignRush by hourly rate, minimum project size and review count. Fast to shortlist, and the filters tell you nothing about taste.

If your site launches once and then sits still, pay per project. If marketing needs new pages every month, a monthly model wins on cost. We compared both in detail in our piece on building an outsourced design team.

10 web design agencies worth a shortlist in 2026

These ten cover the range from award-shelf studios to monthly subscriptions. Facts are drawn from each company's public site.

Instrument

Instrument works across brand, product and marketing design, and was named Campaign US Design Studio of the Year 2026. Its client page lists Nike, Google, Spotify, Microsoft, Patagonia and Stripe.

This is the tier you hire when the website is a company-level statement and the budget matches. It publishes no rates.

Clay

Clay is headquartered in San Francisco with offices in New York, Austin, Denver, Lisbon and Belgrade, and its copyright notice dates the company to 2016. Work spans branding, UX/UI, web design and development, and its client list names Meta, Google, Stripe, Coinbase and Slack.

Clay states three engagement models, time and materials, fixed fee, or retainer, without publishing rates for any of them.

Ramotion

Ramotion operates from San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York and claims over fifteen years in the industry. It pairs web design with design systems work, which is unusual, and lists Netflix, Stripe, Mozilla, Adobe and Okta as clients.

Good fit when you need the site and the component library that the product team will reuse afterwards.

DD.NYC

DD.NYC was founded in 2015 in Manhattan, is certified as a New York State Women-Owned Business Enterprise, and reports over 500 completed projects. It sells web design, branding, packaging and video production under one roof.

It appears first in Clutch's web design ranking snippet, which matters if procurement wants a third-party rating in the file.

Orbit Media Studios

Orbit Media is a Chicago agency at 4043 N Ravenswood Ave that says it has designed over 1,000 websites across more than twenty years. Web design sits alongside SEO, conversion rate optimization and content strategy.

Named clients include ADP, Lincoln Park Zoo, Byline Bank and 6sense. This is the pick when the site has to earn traffic, not applause.

SmartSites

SmartSites reports over 900 websites launched, Inc. 5000 status, Google Premier Partner and Meta Business Partner accreditation. It bundles web design with SEO, paid search, email and social.

The agency ranks in the local pack for this keyword from Paramus, New Jersey. Consider it when you want one vendor for the site and the ad spend behind it.

Excited Agency

Excited Agency is worth naming for one reason: its own ranking article publishes hourly rates, minimum project cost and company size for each of the thirteen agencies it lists.

Almost nobody else does that. It focuses on SaaS, AI, fintech, marketplaces and complex B2B, and reports a 5.0 Clutch rating from 52 reviews.

500 Designs

500 Designs leads the list of highly reviewed web design companies in Clutch's August 2026 ranking. It publishes no rates, so verify scope directly.

We have not worked with them and will not pretend otherwise. The Clutch position is the only claim here we can source.

Superside

Superside is the clearest subscription competitor in this category and one of the few that publishes numbers. Its pricing page states a $15,000 minimum monthly budget on an annual term, a dedicated team plan from $30,000 per month on a twelve-month term, and a $1,000 monthly software fee.

It reports serving over 400 global brands. The annual commitment is the trade-off you are signing for that volume.

Design Elite

Design Elite is a Paris studio that sells design as a monthly subscription rather than per project. Plans run at 949.90, 1,399.90 and 2,099.90 EUR excluding VAT per month with no commitment, and drop to 759.90 EUR on a twelve-month term. Full terms are on the pricing page.

The studio covers web design, full site redesign, UX/UI and wireframing. It does not write production code, so a developer still has to build what we hand over.

The entry plan allows three requests per month and one active request at a time, which is too slow for a large multi-page site. Motion design is included only on the top plan. Past work sits in the portfolio.

What web design agencies charge

Very few agencies publish web design prices, which is the single most frustrating fact about this market.

Of the ten firms above, two give a number without a sales call. Superside states its $15,000 monthly minimum. Design Elite states its monthly plans. Everyone else quotes after discovery.

Clutch and DesignRush partly fill the gap by publishing hourly rate bands and minimum project sizes per agency, which is why buyers keep landing there. Treat those bands as the agency's own submission rather than an audited figure.

If a quote arrives with no line items, ask for the split between design hours, build hours and project management. Vendors who cannot produce that split usually have not scoped the work.

Directories and galleries, and what each is good for

The first page for this query is mostly not agencies, which tells you how buyers actually shop.

  • Clutch ranks web design companies by verified client reviews and lets you filter by rate and minimum budget.
  • DesignRush lists US website design companies with similar filters and heavier sponsorship.
  • Awwwards curates design agency websites by craft, which is where you go to calibrate taste rather than shortlist vendors.
  • Built In city guides cover regional markets, and its Seattle and Austin lists rank for these queries.

Use the directories to build a longlist of twelve, then leave them. Every real signal after that point comes from the agency's own case studies and references.

How to run a shortlist without losing a quarter

Three things slow down agency selection in our experience, and none of them are the design.

The first is an unfinished brief. Requests that arrive without a page list, a content owner or a deadline get quoted with a wide margin, because the vendor is pricing your uncertainty.

The second is review by committee. When five people comment on the same homepage draft with no named decision maker, our own round count roughly doubles. We now ask for one approver before the first draft.

The third is missing content. Copy and photography arrive last on nearly every project, and design cannot close until they do. Agencies rarely say this in a proposal, so plan for it yourself.

Best web design agencies by need

Different needs point to different firms on the list above.

  • A flagship brand site: Instrument or Clay.
  • A site expected to rank and convert: Orbit Media Studios.
  • Design plus the ad spend behind it: SmartSites.
  • A design system alongside the site: Ramotion.
  • Constant page and asset volume after launch: Superside or Design Elite.
  • A published hourly rate before you talk to sales: Excited Agency.

Agencies in California and Texas dominate the related searches for this keyword, and both states are well covered by the Clutch and DesignRush filters. Location matters less than time zone overlap and how fast the team answers.

If you are weighing an agency against a freelancer or a platform instead, our design agency comparison sets the models side by side.

What to ask before you sign

Five questions separate a real shortlist from a polite one.

  • Who designs the work, and who is on the call after the kickoff?
  • Does the fee include front end development, or only design files?
  • How many revision rounds are included, and what triggers a change order?
  • Do we own the source files at the end?
  • Which two clients can we call without the agency on the line?

The last one is the strongest filter. Studios that hesitate on unsupervised references are rarely worth the risk of a January budget.

FAQ

How much do web design agencies charge?

Most do not publish a figure, which is why Clutch and DesignRush profiles get so much traffic: both list self-reported hourly bands and minimum project sizes per agency. Among the firms on this page, only two state a price publicly. Superside sets a $15,000 minimum monthly budget on an annual term, and Design Elite runs monthly plans from 949.90 EUR excluding VAT. Everyone else quotes after a discovery call, and the number moves with page count, whether front end development is included, and how many revision rounds you want.

What are the top 10 web design agencies in the USA?

There is no audited answer, and any list claiming one is selling something. The US firms that recur across Clutch, DesignRush and the ranking articles for this keyword include Instrument, Clay, Ramotion, DD.NYC, Orbit Media Studios, SmartSites and 500 Designs. Which of them is right for you depends on whether you are buying a flagship brand site, a site built to convert, or ongoing page production.

What are the top 10 web agency websites?

For craft rather than vendor selection, Awwwards curates a design agency websites gallery that is the usual reference point. Agency sites that consistently appear in those roundups include Instrument, Clay, Ramotion and Oddfellows. Use them to calibrate what good looks like before you brief anyone, since a mood board of award winners saves at least one revision round later.

Is web design still in demand in 2026?

The commercial evidence says yes. The keyword itself carries a cost per click above $20 in the US, which means agencies are paying real money for each visitor, and Clutch and DesignRush both refresh monthly rankings for it. Demand is also seasonal: searches for agency keywords spike in January when annual budgets reopen, then fall through the spring.

How much does a web designer earn in the USA?

Published salary figures vary widely by source, seniority and city, so we will not quote a single number here. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics reports pay data for web developers and digital designers as one combined occupation, which is the most reliable public reference. For buyers, the useful comparison is not the salary but the loaded cost of a hire, including recruitment, tools and downtime between projects.

Are there good web design agencies in California and Texas?

Yes, and both states dominate the related searches for this keyword. California is well represented by San Francisco and Los Angeles studios such as Clay and Ramotion, while Texas hosts Austin offices for Pentagram and Clay among others. Filter by state on Clutch or DesignRush to build a longlist, then judge on time zone overlap and response speed rather than the address.
