Video Production Agency: 11 Options, Live Action and Animation Compared

Key points

  • Who wrote this: Design Elite, a Paris design studio that produces motion design and does not shoot live action video.
  • The first decision: whether your video needs a camera at all. Live action and animation are different vendors, budgets and timelines.
  • Live action shortlist: ZANE Productions, Sandwich, Beast Films, Vibrant Media Productions, 515 Productions.
  • Animation shortlist: BUCK, Oddfellows, Demo Duck, Levitate Media, Superside, Design Elite.
  • Published prices: Superside ($15,000 monthly minimum), Levitate Media ($1,000 credit above $10,000) and Design Elite (from 949.90 EUR per month, motion only on the top plan).

Design Elite is a Paris design studio, and it does not shoot video. It produces motion design, meaning animation, animated logos and graphics built from design files rather than camera footage.

That distinction matters on this page, because most people searching for a video production agency need a crew, a camera and a location. If that is you, the live action firms listed below are the right shortlist and we are not on it.

The rest of the page is still worth reading, because roughly a third of the briefs that reach a production company never needed a camera at all.

What a video production agency actually does

A video production agency plans, films, edits and delivers video, and the full-service ones own all four stages in-house.

ZANE Productions in Los Angeles states the range clearly: concept development, casting, location management, crew, live action directing, then post-production including editing, color grading and visual effects. Founded in 2015, it lists Amazon, Samsung, Adidas, Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. and NBCUniversal as clients.

Animation studios do a different job with the same output format. There is no shoot day, no crew call sheet and no location. There is storyboarding, design, and frame-by-frame production.

Both deliver an MP4. The costs, the timelines and the failure modes have almost nothing in common.

The first question: does your video need a camera?

Answer this before you contact anyone, because it decides your entire vendor list.

  • You need live action when the video shows real people, a real place, a physical product in use, a testimonial, or an event.
  • You need animation or motion design when the subject is abstract, when the product is software, when you are explaining a process, or when the asset must be re-versioned often.
  • You need mixed media when interviews carry the story and graphics carry the data. Demo Duck and Levitate Media both sell this combination explicitly.

Getting this wrong is the most expensive mistake in the category. Commissioning a shoot for a SaaS product usually produces footage of people looking at laptops, which nobody watches.

11 video production agencies and studios, grouped by what they actually make

These are grouped by capability rather than ranked, because a live action shop and an animation studio are not competing for the same brief. Facts come from each company's public site.

Live action and full service

ZANE Productions works from Los Angeles and also serves New York and Chicago. Founded in 2015, it covers commercials, music videos, vertical video, branded content and live streams, with crew, casting and post-production in-house.

Sandwich operates from 923 E 3rd St in Los Angeles and specializes in launch films and commercials for technology companies. Its client list names Slack, Airbnb, Square, Perplexity, Brex, Instacart and Postman. If you have watched a well-known software launch video, there is a fair chance Sandwich made it.

Vibrant Media Productions is based in Winter Park, Florida, with additional offices in Florida, Atlanta and Nashville. It runs an LED wall virtual production studio, which is unusual at this size, and reports over 250 verified five-star Google reviews alongside Telly, W3 and Davey awards.

Beast Films is a Los Angeles production company focused on corporate video, branded content, commercials and cinematic campaigns for global brands.

515 Productions works from Minneapolis and positions itself as a storytelling partner for mission-driven organizations, turning complex issues into human-centered visual stories. A sensible first call for nonprofits and public sector work.

Mixed live action and animation

Demo Duck was founded in 2011 and sells animated explainers, live action and mixed media side by side, plus character animation and motion graphics. Named clients include Rippling, GEICO, GoFundMe, Dropbox, Northwestern Mutual and FEMA.

Levitate Media is based in Alpharetta, Georgia, with more than sixteen years in business. It covers live action, 2D, 3D and isometric animation, motion graphics, drone work and remote recording, and reports 3,000 clients and 15,000 videos produced for names including Amazon, Nvidia, Asana, Verizon and Delta.

Levitate is also one of the few firms in this category to hint at budget publicly, offering a $1,000 credit toward any project over $10,000. That single line tells you where its floor sits.

Animation and motion design only

BUCK is a global creative company with offices in Los Angeles, Brooklyn, Sydney, Amsterdam and London, working across art, design and technology. Published client work includes J.P. Morgan Payments, Kia and Dunkin'. This is the top of the animation market and priced accordingly.

Oddfellows works from 523 SE 9th Ave in Portland, Oregon, across visual strategy, brand design, motion design and illustration, with more than a decade of work behind it. Its client list names Figma, Netflix, Discord, Adobe, Nike, Spotify and TikTok.

Superside sells motion and video editing inside a creative subscription. Its pricing page states a $15,000 minimum monthly budget on an annual term, a dedicated team from $30,000 per month on a twelve-month term, and a $1,000 monthly software fee.

Design Elite produces motion design on a monthly subscription: animated logos, animated social formats, and graphics built from brand files. It does not film, does not hire crews and does not own camera equipment.

Plans run at 949.90, 1,399.90 and 2,099.90 EUR excluding VAT per month with no commitment, or 759.90 EUR on a twelve-month term. One limit matters here more than the price: motion design is included only on the top plan, so the two cheaper subscriptions cannot produce video at all. Terms are on the pricing page.

What video production costs

The category is close to opaque on price, and the few public numbers are worth more than any average you will read elsewhere.

Among the firms above, three publish something. Superside states its $15,000 monthly minimum. Levitate Media offers $1,000 off projects above $10,000 and provides a budget calculator. Design Elite publishes its monthly plans. Everyone else quotes after a call.

Directories partly fill the gap: Clutch's video production ranking and DesignRush both carry self-reported minimum project sizes per agency, and ProductionHUB lists production companies by city. Read those figures as vendor submissions, not audited rates.

The cost drivers on a live action shoot are the number of shoot days, the crew size, whether talent is paid and unionized, and how many locations are involved. On animation, the drivers are runtime, whether characters are animated, and how much of the visual system has to be designed before anything moves.

Duration matters far less than most buyers expect. A three-minute animation is not three times the price of a one-minute animation, because the design and storyboarding work is largely fixed. Our breakdown of logo animation pricing shows the same effect on the smallest possible format.

What goes wrong in motion production, from our side

Three things delay animation projects in our own production, and none of them are the animating.

The first is a script that has not been approved. Motion work is expensive to change after storyboard sign-off, because every downstream frame depends on it. We now hold the script and the voiceover text as one gate before any design starts.

The second is missing brand assets. Animation needs vector logos, real typefaces and a defined color palette. When a brief arrives with a logo lifted from a website as a PNG, the first day goes to rebuilding files rather than moving them.

The third is sound. Music licensing and voiceover casting are treated as an afterthought on most briefs, then hold up delivery after the picture is finished. Decide the voice and the track before the second round.

How to brief a video vendor without paying for a rewrite

The proposals you get back are only as specific as the brief you send.

  • State the placement first. A pre-roll ad, a website hero loop and a conference opener need different runtimes and different aspect ratios.
  • Give a runtime range rather than a single number, since it lets the vendor propose the cheaper structure.
  • Say who approves. One named approver is the single strongest lever on your revision count.
  • List every deliverable format you will need, including vertical cutdowns and subtitled versions.
  • Ask what happens after delivery. Source files, project files and re-edit rights are negotiated up front or not at all.

Best video production agency by need

The related searches on this keyword ask mostly for lists and for local vendors, so here is the mapping that matters more than geography.

  • A brand commercial with a real crew: ZANE Productions or Beast Films.
  • A software launch film: Sandwich.
  • Nonprofit or mission-driven storytelling: 515 Productions.
  • Virtual production on an LED stage: Vibrant Media Productions.
  • An animated explainer for a product nobody can film: Demo Duck or Levitate Media.
  • High-end brand animation: BUCK or Oddfellows.
  • Continuous motion assets on a fixed monthly fee: Superside or Design Elite.

For local shortlists, ProductionHUB indexes video production companies by city and state, and Clutch lets you filter by minimum project size. Tampa, Orlando and Los Angeles are the markets that surface most often on this query.

More animation work sits in the motion design section of this blog, and finished pieces are in the portfolio.

FAQ

What is a video production agency?

A company that plans, films, edits and delivers video, with the full-service ones owning all four stages in-house. ZANE Productions describes the complete range on its site: concept development, casting, location management, crew, live action directing, then editing, color grading and visual effects. Animation studios such as BUCK and Oddfellows deliver the same file format without ever filming anything, which is why the label covers two quite different businesses.

How much does video production typically cost?

Very few agencies publish rates, so the honest answer is that the range is wide and the drivers are knowable even when the price is not. On live action the cost follows shoot days, crew size, paid talent and the number of locations. On animation it follows runtime, whether characters move, and how much visual design has to be built first. For public reference points: Superside states a $15,000 minimum monthly budget, Levitate Media offers a $1,000 credit on projects above $10,000, and Design Elite publishes monthly subscription plans from 949.90 EUR excluding VAT with motion design on the top plan only.

How much should a 3 minute video cost?

There is no defensible single figure, and any article giving you one has invented it. What we can tell you from producing animation is that runtime scales far less than buyers expect: a three-minute animation is not three times the price of a one-minute animation, because scripting, storyboarding and visual design are largely fixed costs paid once. On live action the same logic applies to shoot days, since a longer edit from the same day of filming costs much less than a second shoot day. Ask vendors to quote per shoot day and per finished minute separately.

How much does it cost to produce a 5 minute video?

The same fixed-cost logic applies, with one warning specific to long runtimes. Five minutes of animation needs considerably more distinct scenes than one minute, and each new scene means new design work rather than reused assets, so the curve does start to climb after roughly the two-minute mark. Before budgeting a five-minute piece, check whether the placement justifies it. Most five-minute briefs we receive would perform better as a ninety-second main film plus three short cutdowns, which is also cheaper to produce.

What are the best video production companies in Tampa?

Tampa and the wider central Florida market appear repeatedly in the searches around this keyword, and the strongest regional name with verifiable credentials is Vibrant Media Productions in Winter Park, which runs an LED wall virtual production studio and reports over 250 verified five-star Google reviews. For a full local shortlist, ProductionHUB indexes video production companies by city and state, and Clutch lets you filter Florida agencies by minimum project size. We have not worked in that market and will not rank firms we cannot verify.

How do I find a video production agency near me?

Start with a directory rather than a search engine, because local results favor whoever manages their business listing best. ProductionHUB lists production companies by city and state, Clutch ranks video production companies by verified client reviews, and Yelp carries local reviews for the larger metros. Then apply one filter search cannot: ask whether the shoot needs to be local at all. Animation and motion design work is location-independent, and a remote studio in a compatible time zone will usually beat a nearby vendor whose specialty does not match your brief.
